CHALMERS -- William Malcolm passed away at his West Point Grey home on October 16, 1995 at the age of 89 years and after a valiant struggle with bone cancer. Predeceased by his brothers Charles and James; his wife of 53 years Elizabeth; loving daughter Daphne Anne; and son-in-law Dimas MARTINS. Dr. Chalmers is survived and missed by his children: William Thomas (Cindy), Carolyn Elizabeth (James), Marguerite, Doris Evelyn (Jimmy). He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren: Dimas, Jimmy, Gregory, Joseph, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Christopher and Alexander. He is also survived by his great nephew George SENDALL and sister-in-law Doris WINTERBOTTOM. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1905, Dr. Chalmers and family immigrated to Vancouver in 1911. Attending the University of British Columbia on scholarship, he was a graduate of the first graduating class of U.B.C. where he won the "Governor General of Canada Award" for scholastic excellence. Pursuing his education at McGill University in Montreal, he is renowned and credited with the invention of Plexiglas at the age of 24. Upon furthering his scientific studies in Germany, Dr. Chalmers returned to Vancouver where he was the successful founder of his own company, namely Western Chemical Industries. Retiring in the 1960's, he and his wife were members of many social organizations including the See-Saws Square Dancing Club. Dr. Chalmers was also a past president of the West Point Grey Home Owners Association and an active member of the Sierra Club. Dr. Chalmers loved his gardens and greenhouse, reading and all wildlife, especially his pets Toby and Bobby, but above all his affection for racoons was unsurpassed. Services will be held on Monday, October 23, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 602 Kingsway, Vancouver. 876-5585.
