      Mr. Colin Huxley
      With the death recently of
      Mr. Colin Stanley Huxley, the
      Warwick district lost one of
      its most prominent citizens
      over many years.
      The., late Mr. Huxleyfwas
      born at Richmond (N.S.W.)
in 1879 and educated at the
      Richmond! school f and
      Hawkesbury Agricultural Col-
      lege. He arrived in Warwick
in 1899, and decided to stay
      here although his original in-
tention had been to go north.
One of the first business men
he met in Warwick was the
      late Mr. James De Conlay,
      who offered him a position.
After being with the firm for
      several years he was appoint-
      ed manager of the grocery,
      ironmongery and produce de-
      partments in succession to
      the late Mr., Dingwall, who
      had fcommenced in business
      on his own account.
      Several years after his mar
riage to a daughter of the late.
      Thomas Hall, author .of the
      book on Warwick's early his-
      tory, Mr. Huxley, commenced
ln business on; his own ac-
      count and was doing remark-
ably well when he had the
misfortune to be burnt out. He
      then, moved to Mt. Sturt
      where he combined produce
      buying with farming pursuits,
      having purchased a property
      at Loch Lomond In later
      years he retired and1 took-up
      residence in Warwick.
      For many years he was
      closely associated with the
      Queensland State Wheat
      Board, the Eastern Downs. H.
and A. Association as a com-
      mitteeman, and the Warwick,
      Caledonian Society of which
he was a life- member - his
      mother was born in Inverness
(Scotland). He was also, a life
      member of the ambulance
      brigade. He was local organ-
iser of the West Moreton and
      Darling Downs exhibit at the
Sydney Show for a number of
      years and also judged, the
      produce and vegetable sec
tions at a number of Downs
      shows. An expert in trotting
      events, he acted as handicap-
per for a wide circuit of
      Downs shows.
      Mr. Huxley took an active
      interest in most sports and
was a member of the Warwick
      Bowling Club for years.
      His grandfather, the late
      Thomas Huxley, eminent
      British scientist and general
biologist of note in the 19th
      century, was 23-year-old as-
      sistant surgeon on the sur-
      veying ship H.M.S. Rattle-
      snake which left Sydney on
April 29, 1848 to survey the
      inner passage between the
      Great Barrier Reef and the
      mainland. Thomas Huxley
      was awarded a Fellowship of
the Royal Society at the early,
age of 25, and the society's
      Royal Medal at the almost
      unprecedented age of. 27. The
late Mr. Colin Huxiey was also
      a second cousin of Professor;
