OBITUARY.
JOHN ASHTON.
An old resident of the Hawkesbury dis
trict, John Stevenson Ashton, formerly of
Richmond, passed to the Great Beyond at
Clarendon on Monday at the age of 78
years, senile decay and heart failure being
the cause of death. Deceased was a son
of the late Thomas Ashton, who was one
of the first men to make bricks in Rich-
mond, whilst his mother was formerly Miss
Emily Magick. Both the Ashtons and Ma-
gicks are well-known Richmond families,
the subject of this notice being a store
house of knowledge of the early days. De-
ceased was related to the Stevensons, the
Slys, and many other well-known Richmond
families. He was married to Miss Ann
Jane Page, an aunt of the ex-Member for
Botany, Mr. Fred Page, and left a grown
up family of one son and four daughters',
viz., Joseph F. Ashton (Bundanoon), Emily,
Susan, Linda, and Sarah. An elder son died
in childhood. The late John Ashton was an
old time drover, and was employed in that
capacity by the late Arthur Dight, Messrs.
B. Richards, J. Onus, Newcomen, and oth
ers, and many and varied were his experi-
ences while overlanding with mobs of 'fats.'
The funeral took place on Tuesday, the re-
mains being laid to rest in the Presbyterian
cemetery, Richmond. Rev. W. R. Milne
officiated at the graveside, and Mr. Chand-
ler was the undertaker.
