      Gowans was born in Westoe, South Shields in 1872 to Dr. William Gowans of Westoe House.[2] Gowans was educated at Harrow before matriculating to Clare College, Cambridge in 1890.[2] Gowans joined the British Army and was posted to the Royal Field Artillery, fighting in South Africa during the Second Boer War, where he reached the rank of major. From March to June 1900 he served in operations around Natal and later around the Zululand Frontier, including the defence of Forts Itala and Prospect.[3] For his actions during the conflict he was mentioned in despatches and also received the Distinguished Service Order, the Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps and the King's South Africa Medal with two clasps. In 1902 he married Erin Laura Muriel, daughter of William Wheelwright of Durban,[3] and settled in South Africa.

      Gowans served his country again during the First World War, serving as a temporary Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Field Artillery, and was mentioned in despatches on another two occasions. [16]

      James Gowans DSO (23 April, 1872 - 14 March, 1936) was an English-born sportsman who played international rugby union as a wing for Scotland and as a cricketer represented Marylebone Cricket Club. He was in the Cambridge Rugby Fifteen, 1892-93, and was a Member of the Scotland Rugby Fifteen in 1893-94-95-96. He served in South Africa, 1900-1; in operations in Natal, March to June, 1900; operations on the Zululand Frontier of Natal in September and October 1901, including the defence of Forts Itala and Prospect; operations in Orange River Colony, February to 31 May 1902. He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 29 July 1902]; was awarded the Queen's Medal with three clasps; the King's Medal with two clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 31 October 1902]: "James Gowans, Major, Durham Artillery (Militia). In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". He retired as Captain, Durham Royal Field Reserve Artillery (Major and Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, Reserve of Officers). He married, in 1902, Erin Laura Muriel, daughter of William Wheelright, of Durban, Natal, and they had one son and two daughters.
